Explore official National Park Service history →In 1559, Tristán de Luna led a Spanish expedition of approximately 1,500 people and 11 ships into Pensacola Bay. About one month later, a hurricane sank much of the fleet and devastated the settlement’s food supplies.
The colonists continued until 1561, but the settlement was ultimately abandoned. Pensacola’s settlement began six years before St. Augustine; because it did not remain continuously occupied, St. Augustine holds the distinction of the oldest continuously occupied European-established city in the continental United States.

The free outdoor concert series returns to the Gulfside Pavilion every Tuesday from 7–9 p.m., April 7 through October 27, 2026. Bring a lawn chair or blanket; pets and glass are prohibited.

Separate large displays are held across the Pensacola Bay Area. Confirmed 2026 shows include Downtown Pensacola and Pensacola Beach at 9 p.m.; Navarre and Milton also present their own community celebrations. From some open waterfront viewpoints, more than one distant display may be visible, depending on location and weather.
